More than 200 delegates representing 24 cities in three Southwestern states pledged their resources and facilities to the country’s victory program at the first annual conference of the Southwestern States Region of the Council of Jewish Federations and Welfare Funds. Sidney Hollander of Baltimore, president of the Council of Jewish Federations and Welfare Funds, called for increased support to overseas needs but emphasized that local obligations should not be neglected.
The delegates adopted a report urging their communities to give maximum support to the 1942 fund-raising campaigns. Optimism was expressed by both delegates and speakers that increased funds could be raised in 1942 to meet the increased needs. A special “Information Please” session was one of the features of the regional assembly, with representatives of national and overseas agencies describing their war-time programs in response to questions from the delegates.
The conference adopted a resolution calling upon the national agencies to “conserve their energies” by combining regional conferences and filed services wherever possible. Leslie L. Jacobs of Dallas was elected president of the Southwest States Region. Sol Brachman of Fort Worth and Mose M. Feld of Houston were elected vice-presidents. Julius Livingston of Tulsa was named treasurer.
