Although Attorney General Francis Biddle stated last week that he is considering the removal of the “enemy alien” stigma from certain categories of Germans in this country, along the same lines as his exemption of Italian aliens, responsible sources here today expressed the opinion that at least another three months will elapse before he can take such action. It was emphasized that when action does come, it will be less sweeping than in the case of the Italians.
In a letter addressed to the American Civil Liberties Union, Mr. Biddle stated that extension to other alien groups of the principle exempting Italians from enemy-alien restrictions “is being carefully studied.” No proof of loyalty will go unheeded, Mr. Biddle said.
