The immediate release of 1,600 Jewish refugees interned in Morocco and Algiers will be made possible by the Joint Distribution Committee following an appeal received from the Jewish Refugee Committee in Algeria stating that local authorities, acting with the consent of the American Consulate, have advised the Committee that they are prepared to free the in-terned refugees on condition that the Jewish relief organization assumes financial responsibility for their transportation out of the camps and the initial requirements of their lodging.
Joseph C. Hyman, executive vice-chairman of the Joint Distribution Committee, in announcing today that the J.D.C. was ready to provide finances for initial reasonable expenses, pending the working out of larger governmental relief plans for the entire population in need, estimated that $26,000 will be needed to comply with the request of the North African authorities. The 1,600 interned refugees who will be liberated include 650 in Algeria and 950 in French Morocco. The J.D.C. has been working through local committees in North Africa for more than a year, helping both native Jews and refugees who had come to North Africa, Mr. Hyman said.
