Five Senators today issued a joint statement declaring the rescue of the Jews from Nazi Europe to be “urgent and timely” and pledging their active support in Congress to any workable plan which may evolve from the Emergency Conference to Save the Jews of Europe which is scheduled to open on July 20 at the Commodore Hotel in New York.
The statement, signed by Senators Edwin C. Johnson, Democrat of Colorado; Warren Barbour, Republican of New Jersey; James J. Davis, Republican of Pennsylvania; William Langer, Republican of North Dakota; and James E. Murray, Democrat of Montana, reads:
“Moved by the plight of the helpless Jews of Europe, who are facing a purposeful annihilation on a scale the world has never seen, we wish to welcome the Emergency Conference to Save the Jews of Europe, and we eagerly await any proposed plan for vigorous action which may result from this meeting of recognized experts in the fields of international affairs, economics, immigration and religion.
“We are convinced that the rescue of as many as possible of the four million remaining Jews in Germany and the occupied countries is both urgent and timely. It is a terrible problem which has been too long evaded or at least overlooked.
“We dare not wait any longer to move these helpless objects of Nazi wrath to places of safety, for every day of postponement means death to thousands of innocent victims. As the defeat of the Axis grows imminent the tempo of extermination will be stepped up. If we wait until the war is won, there may be only corpses left to enjoy victory. For these reasons we pledge our active support in the Congress to any workable plans which may evolve from this Conference.”
