The Polish government-in-exile honored a Hebrew University scientist today who had tested on himself a typhus vaccine which saved the lives of Polish soldiers in Russia.
On behalf of Polish President Wladislaw Raczkiewicz the Polish Consul General at Jerusalem pinned the Golden Cross of Merit on Dr. Israel J. Kligler, Mead of the Department of Hygiene and Bacteriology at the Hebrew University. Lowell C. Pinkerton, American Consul General, and other dignitaries attended the ceremony.
Dr. Kligler, who once was associated with the Rockefeller Foundation, injected himself and his assistants with vaccines in preparing the formula for the relief of the Polish army. They became seriously ill, but recovered.
FRIENDS OF UNIVERSITY CONFERENCE LAUDS MAGNES, BUT REGRETS ICHUD ACTIVITIES
A resolution expressing admiration for Dr. Judah L. Magnes’ efforts on behalf of the Hebrew University, but voicing regret that some members of the university faculty, led by Dr. Magnes, are participating in a “movement likely to jeopardies Zionists aims,” was adopted here today at the conference of the Friends of the Hebrew University. The latter part of the resolution apparently referred to Dr. Magnes’ activities in the Ichud party which advocates the establishment of a binational state in Palestine.
The conference also sent greetings to its friends in America, who it pointed out, have always been the chief supporters of the University, and expressed the hope that they would continue their efforts. It voted to establish a world center of the Friends of the University in Palestine.
