Over 1,000 American rabbis from every section of the country, the largest number ever to have signed their names to any single document, have joined in addressing an appeal to the “Conscience of Great Britain,” as well as to the leaders of the United Nations, demanding the immediate opening of the doors of Palestine to the Jews of Europe.

The appeal demands the fulfilment of the pledges of the Balfour Declaration and the League of Nations Mandate for the reconstitution of Palestine as a free and democratic Jewish Commonwealth. The pronouncement released by Rabbi Arthur J. Lelyveld, executive director of the Committee on Unity for Palestine of the Zionist Organization of America, was sent today to all members of the British Parliament and Cabinet and to the British press. Signatories of the appeal include rabbis of Orthodox, Conservative, and Reform congregations throughout the country, and 155 chaplains serving in all branches of the United States armed forces.
