Seventy-four Jews have been killed and 183 hospitalized in anti-Jewish outbreaks in Tripoli, which have been in progress since Sunday, it was reported here today. (The report was confirmed today in London by the British Finistry of Information.)
The Jewish quarters of the city, which is the capital of the Italian colony of tripolitania in western Libya, presently under temporary British adminstration, were looted and gutted by Arab mobs Sunday night, the report said. One Arab was killed and 36 injured, and two Italians wounded during the disturbances.
All of Tripolitania has been placed under a rigid curfew and subversive elevents among the Arabs have been arrested, although with the exception of two small was in eastern Tripolitania, no outbreaks have been reported outside of Tripoli.
British troops are patrolling Tripoli, according to a British spokesman here, dispersing crowds and arresting looters. All gatherings of more than five people have been barmed.
The British Ministry of Information issued a statement declaring that these acts of violence are unprecedented in the history of Tripolitania. The statement attributed the outbreak of ricting, violence and arson to “Arab bands” and added that ‘leading local personalities, both among the Arabs and Jews, have disassociated themselve firmly from the lawbreakers and have expressed their deep regret for the occurences.”
