The scientific discoveries by Dr. Chaim Weizmann here of great help to the democracies in winning the first and second World Wars,” President Truman said last night in a message addressed to Dr. Weizmann on the occasion of tis 71st birthday which was observed at a dinner at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel.
President Truman said that Dr. Weizmann’s discoveries “hold great promise for millions who are now living under the weight of poverty and starvation.” Dr. Weizmann was presented with a check for $1,250,000 for the Weizmann Institute in Palestine instead of a million-dollar check as originally planned.
