After a lull of three weeks, the authorities in Palestine today resumed rounding up Jews, on the pretext of searching for 100 Jewish “illegal” immigrants who are alleged to have landed Last night.
Police and British troops today lined all roads in Northern Palestine, stopping all vehicles, including buses, and checking on each Jewish passenger. Only Jews were requested to show identity documents; Arabs were not meslested. A number of Jews were taken off several buses and transferred to a military camp near the Jewish settlement of Rosh-Pinah.
Meanwhile, it was reported here today that the preparations which the Government is making for receiving the Anglo-American inquiry commission are in full swing. All government departments have been asked to speed collection of data which right be required by the members of the commission. A special questionnaire, prepared by the Government, was sent to them today.
The general tone of the questions seem to indicate that the Government wishes to impress upon the members of the commission the necessity to restrict Jewish immigration into the country.
Only very few items in the questionnaire deal with the Arabs. The questions which are considered by Jews as aimed at influencing the commission on the immigration problem are: How will immigration affect the Arabs? What medical and other care do arriving immigrants receive from the Jewish Agency? Are housing conditions sdequate – does the quantity of building materials meet the demands for required housing, and how long will it take to import needed materials? What is the situation of Jewish industry – is it going to develop or shrink What is the situation in the Jewish labor market – is unemployment expected and how seen?
