The Bulgarian Government today announced that real estate confiscated from Jews during the pro-Nazi regime will be returned to Jewish owners without any special legal proceedings.
It is estimated that 8,288 buildings, valued at 1,850,000,000 levas, will thus be returned to Jews. Most of these buildings are now under the supervision of the State Property Administration. The property will be returned not only to Bulgarian Jews, but also to Jewish residents of Bulgaria who are Greek and Yugoslav citizens, the official announcement said.
Today’s announcement followed the issuance of a law last week canceling the needs on forced sales of real estate by Jews during the pro-Nazi regime, when their property was either confiscated or “aryanized.” As a result of this law, 176 deeds were cancelled over the week-end and the Jewish owners took immediate possession of their property.
