Republican Senators are waiting to see President Truman’s specific proposals for liberalizing U.S. immigration laws to permit the entrance of a substantial number of European refugees before they commit them-selves to a definite position on the legislation, it was indicated here today.

Sen. Robert Taft of Ohio, chairman of the Senate Republican Steering Committee refused to comment on the reception the President’s program would receive. Sen. Elmer Thomas of Oklahoma, Democrat, today demanded that all immigration be halted immediately.
