U.J.A. $170,000,000 Drive to Be Opened at National Conference in Washington This Week

The $170,000,000 campaign of the 1947 United Jewish Appeal will be formally opened at a two-day national conference Feb. 22 and 23, at the Shoreham Hotel in Washington, which will be attended by more than 400 prominent Jewish leaders from all sections of the country, it was announced today by Henry Morgenthau Jr., former Secretary of the Treasury and general chairman of the U.J.A.

The conference will mark the opening of local drives in 4,000 communities throughout the United States in support of the national U.J.A. campaign. In addition to Mr. Morgenthau, speakers at the conference will include former Governor Herbert H. Lehman of New York, ex-Director General of UNRRA, who will discuss the effects of of UNRRA’s liquidation on the reconstruction of the shattered Jewish communities of Europe, and Mrs. David M. Levy, chairman of the National Women’s Division of the United Jewish Appeal, who returned recently from a two-month mission to Europe and Palestine. Mrs. Levy will present an eye-witness report of the conditions and needs of the Jewish communities in France, Belgium, The Netherlands, Poland, Germany, Austria, Italy and Palestine.

“We earnestly hope that all Americans, regardless of race or creed, will give their generous support to the United Jewish Appeal,” Mr. Morgenthau said. “This is a cause which represents a major plank in the platform for world peace and construction.”
