The three-day second annual congress of the Central Jewish Committee of Germany opened at Bad Reichenhall, a small town about 80 miles from here, on a note of hope that this would be the last congress in Germany and that the next year’s meeting would be held in Palestine.
The recently-elected delegates heard greetings from Brigadier General Robinson Duff, representing Gen. Joseph T. McNarney, U.S. commander in Germany. Leon Retter, general secretary of the Committee, and David Treger, vice-president, appealed to “all who believe in democracy, justice, freedom and fraternity” to help the displaced Jews to emigrate and start to rebuild their lives. Rabbi Philip S. Bernstein, Gen. McNarney’s advisor on Jewish affairs, and Carl Atkin, representing UNRRA, as well as representatives of various voluntary relief organizations addressed the opening session.
