Jewish Extremists in Jerusalem Prison Plotted Jailbreak, Palestine Authorities Report

The discovery of a plot by Jewish prisoners in the Jerusalem Central Prison to escape was announced here today by the authorities.

The statement said that an interior wall had been breached and that the main outer wall of the jail was partially penetrated before the plot was uncovered. The preparations for the jailbreak evidently went back a considerable period of time, and some sources assert that it was part of an attempt to save the lives of Dov Grumer and the other condemned extremists.

Michael Morris, 30, was shot and killed by a British soldier in Tel Aviv last night. Morris and his wife, who were returning to their home in a suburb of the city, were halted by a two-man patrol which was checking passes. While one soldier was examining his papers, the second shot him. His wife declared that he made no move which could have been interpreted as hostile.

The Jewish National Council, in a message to the U.N. session on Palestine, appealed for support of the Jewish cause in the name of “justice.” It stated that even had Hitler’s cataclysm not overtaken the Jewish people in the war, you would have been duty bound to live up to the pledges made to us on the basis of historical truth and ultimate justice.

“Even were Jewish minorities loved and contented in all the countries, the world could not condemn it to remain forever as a minority without a state and without a homeland. We cannot believe that you regard the Jewish nation as less deserving of liberty and homeland than any other nation,” it declared. Pointing out the role of the Jews in building up Palestine, the message stated that the Jews desire only peace with their Arab neighbors.

In a second cable to the General Assembly’s president, Oswaldo Aranha, and Secretary-General Trygve Lie, the Council declared that the Jewish Agency was the only body representing the Jews. In a separate message Chief Rabbis Isaac Herzog and Ben Zion Usiel informed the U.N. that they will say special prayers for the success of the session.

From Cairo it was reported that Rassem el Khaldi, a Palestine Arab who has been living in exile in Egypt, has been refused entry to the United States as a member of the Palestine “observer” delegation to the U.N. The action was taken on the grounds that the British will not grant him a visa to enter Palestine.
