The second anniversary of their liberation was marked here by 5,000 displaced Jews who made a pilgrimage to the mass graves of Jewish victims of Nazism which are situated just outside the town.

Memorial services, in the course of which high-ranking American military and UNRRA officials paid tribute to the Jewish dead and expressed hopes for a better future for those who escaped the Nazis, were held. The speakers platform was decorated with American and Zionist flags, and placards inscribed in English and Hebrew urged the opening of Palestine to Jewish refugees.
