The borders between Palestine and both Syria and Lebanon have been closed to Jews as a result of the Mufti’s arrival in Beirut, because the Levant states fear an infiltration of “Jewish terrorists” who wish to injure the Mufti. Palestinian and Iraqi Jews now in Syria and Lebanon have been ordered to leave.
The Syrian newspaper Barada reports that an official inquiry is being made into the activities of an organization smuggling Jews from Syria into Palestine.
(A Foreign Office spokesman disclosed in London today that the British have protested to Lebanon against the arrival of the Mufti, who is in Lebanon to attend a meeting of the Arab League Council which is scheduled to discuss the Palestine issue. Its decision to admit the Mufti has created an “unfortunate impression” in Britain, the Lebanese Government was told. The spokesman said that no protest had been made to Egypt.)
