The United Nations decison on the partitioning of Palestine was hailed today on the floor of the Senate by a number of Senators who ##med it the best possible solution under the circumstances and appealed to the Arabs to accept it. The speakers included majority leader Sen. Alben W. Barkley, ## Charles W. Tobey, Sen. Leverett Saltonstall, Sen. Denis Chavez and Sen. Scott ##.
A message of thanks to President Truman for his leadership on the Palestine ##stion was received today at the White House from Dr. Abba Hillel Silver, chairman of the American Zionist Emergency Council and of the American section of the Jewish Agency. “Your policy on Palestine has also served to create a strong bond of friendship between the American people and the Jewish citizens of Palestine which, ## are confident, will serve the best interests of both countries,” the message said. You have won a place of distinction in Jewish history. May the years ahead find us all moving forward towards the better, freer world which is our common goal.”
Assurances against further violence to the American Legaion in Damascus were given today by Shukri Bey Kuwatly, president of Syria, and Jamie Mardam Bey, Prime Minister, to Robert B. Momminger, American Charge d’Affaires in the Syrian capital, it was announced by the State Department.
After a call on President Truman today, Dr. Oswaldo Aranha, retiring president of the just-concluded United Nations General Assembly, described the plan for partition of Palestine as a “bold and historic experiment which will be one of the greatest factors in avoiding unrest in international relations.”
