South African Jews Greet Israel with Sounding of Shofar; Pledge Support to State

Scenes rarely witnessed in this country marked the celebration last night of the establishment of Israel.All synagogues were crowded at special thanksgiving services, while at the chief Wolmaran St. Synagogue the Shofar vas sounded amid expressions of solidarity and support for the new Jewish state.

A torchlight procession organized by the South African Zionist Youth Council jade its way from the main synagogue to a mass demonstration the local City Hall where the Israeli flag was unfurled. Speakers urged the Union of South Africa to recognize the infant state, pointing to the traditional friendship that has always existed between South Africa and the Jews of Palestine.
