Joseph C. Satterthwaite Appointed Director of State Department Near Eastern Office

Joseph C. Satterthwaite has been appointed director of the State Department’s Office of Hear Eastern and African Affairs, Secretary of State George C. Marshall announced today. Formerly deputy director of the office, Satterthwaite now moves up to the position made vacant by the appointment of Loy Anderson as Ambassador to India. Satterthwaite has held consular posts in Mexico City, Buenos Aires, Baghdad, Ankara and Damascus.

Presidential press-secretary Charles G. Ross told a news conference here today that he had “nothing on it,” relative to a report, circulating at Lake Success, that President Truman would lift the Middle East arms embargo shortly.
