Senator Warren G. Magnuson, of Washington, today proposed a bill to establish a temporary immigration quota for Israel. He suggested that 100 Israeli citizens be allowed to enter the United States annually. Rep. Kenneth B. Keating, of New York, introduced a similar House measure last week.
Rep, Emanuel Celler, New York Democrat and head of the House Judiciary Committee, which handles immigration matters, wrote to President Truman last week pointing out that setting up an immigration quota for Israel was a matter of Presidential proclamation. He suggested that the President set up the statutory minimum quota of 100 for both Israel and Transjordan. The United States granted both countries de jui recognition on January 31.
