Vatican Radio today broadcast a denial of reports that the United States has opened negotiations to persuade the Pope to recognize Israel, if the Israeli Government would recognize the status quo of Christian communities in the Jewish state.
(An Israeli Government spokesman in Tel Aviv last night categorically denied charges made in Rome that the government has been carrying out a policy hostile to the Roman Catholic Church. He emphasized that no restrictions other than those made necessary by wartime conditions had been imposed on the clergy or other members of religious orders.)
