A demonstration of friendship between Israel and Argentina took place here today at a luncheon tendered by Arthur Lourie, Israeli Consul-General, to Dr. Pablo Manguel, first Minister of Argentina to Israel, who is now in New York an route to his post in Tel Aviv. The affair was attended by Argentine and Israeli diplomats and officials.
Mr. Lourie, after offering a toast to Dr. Manguel, emphasized the friendly relations between Argentina and Israel. He said that the appointment of a Minister Plenipotentiary of Argentina to Tel Aviv is new proof of this and will undoubtedly strengthen the friendly ties between the two nations.
Dr. Benno Weiser, director of the Latin American Department of the Jewish Agency, mentioned the fact that Argentina not only was friendly to Israel but has adopted a constitution which rejects racial and religious discrimination. He said that Dr. Manguel, as an Argentinian of Jewish descent, was a natural bridge between the two friendly nations.
Replying, Dr. Manguel said that he is anxious to reach Israel and hopes “to be able to serve the sentiments of my President who sees in Israel a country which has been successful in its endeavors oven though it has gone through immense sufferings.” In this respect, Israel has been able to win the admiration and respect of the whole world, the Argentine diplomat stated.
