Despite the fact that Israel is a democracy women there actually do not possess equal status with men in many facets of life, Mrs. Israel Goldstein, president of the Pioneer Women, declared at a press conference here yesterday, following her return from the Jewish state.
Crediting the Israel Council of Working Women with leading the fight for full equality, Mrs. Goldstein added that “women in Israel wage a continuous battle to achieve their proper place in the nation’s framework.” Among the legislation sought by the women of Israel are laws which would provide for common property ownership, equalize divorce rights, give to both parents equal responsibility for children, with the mother, in the case of divorce, given custody of children under 13, abolish illegitimacy, nullify laws which permit girls younger than 17 to marry and, in general, create complete equality in all legal matters.
