Isar Beeri, former Haganah officer who was accused of ordering the execution of an innocent Haganah member in Jerusalem on charges of aiding the enemy during the fighting last year, was found guilty today but was sentenced to only one day of imprisonment. The victim of what the Israel Government later admitted had been a tragic mistake was Meir Tubianski.
The court said it had considered that the “atmosphere at the time was poisoned by constant suspicion of espionage” and had also taken into account “Beeri’s long and loyal service to the Haganah.” Unless a reprieve is forthcoming from President Weizmann, Beeri’s sentence will be carried out within a month’s time.
