Although the Jewish community of Tunis is prosperous and feels secure, the Jews in the provincial towns of Tunisia live among Arabs who are not friendly toward them, M. Butkowski, director of the Jewish Agency’s European Office, today told a press conference here.

The Agency official, who just returned from an extensive tour of Tunisia, reported that in at least one town, which he would not name for obvious reasons, the position of 500 Jewish residents among thousands of Arabs was “rather precarious.” Under these conditions, he asserted, Tunisian Jews are preparing to migrate to Israel.
