Thousands of Israelis participated in a pilgrimage to Mount Zion here today, in observance of the ancient fast day of Tisha B’av, marking the destruction of the ancient Holy Temples here. Traditional recitations of the Book of Lamentations and of Kinnoth took place at the holy site.

Last night bearded Jews gathered on the rooftop of an ancient synagogue facing the Wailing Wall–which is in the Old City, in Arab hands–to recite the Tisha B’av prayers. Meanwhile, a burual chamber dating back to the period of the Second Temple was discovered today by a worker operating a pneumatic drill on the site of the future building which will house sessions of the World Zionist Congress.
