The 100-member Israel Symphony Orchestra, scheduled to begin a nationwide tour of the United States next January, will be conducted by Arturo Toscanini when it plays in New York City, it was announced here yesterday by Dr. Serge Koussevitzky, former director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra.
Opening in Washington on Jan. 7 under the baton of Dr. Koussevitzky, the orchestra will give 60 concerts throughout the country, 20 under Dr. Koussevitzky’s leadership and the remainder conducted by Leonard Bernstein and Eleazar de Carvalho.
Mr. Toscanini and Dr. Koussevitzky have both played prominent roles in the development of the Israel Symphony. Mr. Toscanini directed the orchestra’s first concerts in 1936 while Dr. Koussevitzky, who conducted the orchestra in 16 concerts in Israel last spring, will go there again next month to lead the Symphony at 12 concerts.
