The State Department has discouraged, at least temporarily, the bid of Egyptian Foreign Minister Mohammed Salah el-Din for free American arms.

Secretary of State Dean Acheson said at this week-end press conference that he discussed arms with the Egyptian Minister, who is now in Washington, but that they did not get down to specific proposals. In any event, said Mr. Acheson, Atlantic Pact countries and other areas would be given priority on arms before Egypt could be considered.
