Israel Naval Heroes Honored in New York; Expanded Merchant Marine for Israel Seen

The development of Israel as a democratic country with strong economic bonds with the United States and as a fabricating and distritution center for the Middle East, implemented with an expanded merchant marine and harbor facilities, was forecast by Howard S. Cullman, chairman of the Port of New York Authority, speaking before the American Fund for Israel Institutions at its second annual Israel Maritime League dinner at the Waldorf-Astoria.

Three Israel naval heroes were honored at the dinner including Yochay Binnun, a holder of the highest Israel Medal of Naval Affairs; Arie Kaplan, a naval Commander, now on civilian status; and Abraham Zakay, Staff Officer of the Israel Navy. Israel was represented by Avraham Harman, Counselor to the Israel Embassy.
