Eban, Cantor, Payne Honored for Aiding Hebrew Chair at New York University

Israel’s Ambassador Abba S. Eban, Eddie Cantor and ### George Payne, Dean Emeritus of the New York University School of Education, were honored tonight at a dinner on behalf of the New York University Chair of Hebrew Culture and Education. Maximilian Moss, president of the New York City Board of Education, presided at the affair which was held at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel. The proceeds of the dinner will go towards the drive to raise $250,000 to endow the New York University Chair of Culture and Education in perpetuity, by agreement with the authorities of the University.

The citation to Ambassador Eban was presented by Prof. Abraham I. Katsh in appreciation of Eban’s effort “in building a cultural bridge between the United States and the new state of Israel.” The citation to Mr. Cantor was presented for “his own standing humanitarian efforts to foster mutual understanding among all peoples.” Dean Payne was awarded the citation for “his pioneering contribution to the Chair of Hebrew Culture And Education at the University. “The Chair offers 23 courses in the Hebrew language, education and Jewish culture to students of all races and religious backgrounds.
