A French military tribunal has acquitted Gerhard Utikal, former chief of the Nazi office for requisitioning art works in France during the German occupation, of responsibility in the seizing of art works and valuables owned by French Jews.

Utikal was specifically charged with responsibility in the stealing of 4,174 specific items. It was estimated that 37 railway cars were used to ship the loot from France to Germany at various times between 1941 and 1944.
