Hugh Gaitskell, British Chancellor of the Exchequer, said last night that religious tolerance was a feature of democracy. He warned that when one lost democracy and the right to select one’s own government, loss of religious tolerance was not far off. The Chancellor spoke at a dinner in his honor tendered in aid of Jewish schools here.
Dr. Israel Brodie, the Chief Rabbi, expressed appreciation for the Education Act of 1944 which, he said, enabled the establishment of Jewish schools in which Jewish children could be educated in their own religious beliefs.
