The belief that the Western Powers will attempt to induce Egypt to join a Middle East pact by offering to support Egyptian claims against Israel, and by agreeing to exclude Israel from the proposed regional defense arrangement, prevails in Israel, according to reports received here today.

A cable from Tel Aviv in today’s Times of London says that “Egypt is expected to come into line sooner rather than later.” However, the correspondent adds that in some Israel Government circles the view is held that the Western Powers, after the rebuff they received from Egypt, will go ahead with plans for a Middle East defense organization without further attempts to induce Egypt to participate as a founding member.

The correspondent reports that official circles in Israel are also considering the possibility of a plan by the Western Powers to establish a defense system based on what the Israeli call a “Turkey-Israel axis.”
