Diplomatic representatives of the United States, Britain, France and Turkey called at the Israel Foreign Ministry this morning to request a statement of Israel’s views on the proposed Middle East defense command.
The four diplomats declared that their governments intend to continue with the formation of the regional alliance despite Egypt’s refusal to participate as a founding member. They also asked Israel what part it would eventually be prepared to play in such a pact.
There was no indication what the Foreign Office replied. However, Foreign Minister Moshe Sharett reported this afternoon to the Cabinet on the visit of the diplomats, and it is understood that the Cabinet adopted decisions which will be announced in the Israel Parliament next Sunday by Mr. Sharett.
Meanwhile, the Security and Foreign Affairs Committee of the Parliament has called a meeting of its members for tomorrow to hear and discuss a report by Mr. Sharett on the representations made this morning to the Israel Government by the Big Powers.
