The Jewish Welfare Federation here last night scored a complete victory in its battle with the Jewish Community Council by defeating a Council-sponsored amendment which would have given the Council the right to allocate its own funds without examination and by electing the entire slate of candidates proposed by its nominating committee.
A total of 1,012 votes were cast and of this number 397 voted in support of the Council’s amendment which would have required a two-thirds vote for adoption. There were four candidates nominated by petition and the highest vote secured by the most popular of them was 200 votes below the Federation candidate lowest on the list. A two-hour debate was conducted on the amendment with time equally divided between both factions.
