The tortures suffered by Rumanian Jews done to death in “phantom trains” during the war were described here today by a witness at the trial of Franz Rademacher, former official of the Nazi Foreign Office, who is on trial on charges of responsibility in the deportation and death of thousands of Jews in Central Europe.
The witness related how thousands of Rumanian Jews were stripped of all clothes and herded into long freight trains, regardless of age or sex. The unheated trains were shunted up and down the length of the Rumanian rail system until all the imprisoned Jews died of starvation or exposure.
