The people of Cuba are well aware of, and grateful for, the contribution the Jews have made to the cultural, economic and industrial development of the country, General Fulgencio Batista, President of Cuba, told Dr. Henry Shoskes, HIAS representative, it was reported today by HIAS headquarters here.

General Batista also lauded the 7,000 Jews of Cuba for their patriotism and devotion to their country, and for their solidarity in caring for their co-religionists. The Centro Israelita — the Jewish community, organized by the immigrants to Cuba — has been the guiding force in the upbuilding of Jewish life in Cuba.
