The Histadrut, Israel’s general federation of labor, today initiated a program designed to help cope with the mounting unemployment in Israel.
The Histadrut executive, after hearing Labor Minister Golda Myerson report on the government’s plans to alleviate the situation by a program of public works, established a special committee to encourage public works projects on a local as well as national level, to promote more jobs. The committee was also charged with protecting the social welfare of the jobless.
Meanwhile, the Working Women’s Council of Israel held a special session to plan measures to aid unemployed women workers. It was reported that of Israel’s 19,000 unemployed, 2,500 are women.
The Histadrut executive today voted to donate 4,000 pounds for relief for flood victims in Britain, Holland and Belgium. The contributions will be made through the labor movement in each of the countries.
