The succession of Georgi Malenkov as Premer of the Soviet Union will not deter the USSR from its present anti-Semitic course, Mrs. Irving M. Engel, national president of the National Council of Jewish Women, declared here today at the opening of the organization’s 20th triennial convention.
Mrs. Engel told the 800 delegates from 245 local chapters throughout the United States that it is “only wishful thinking that sustains the view that the death of Stalin could mean the end of Soviet anti-Semitism–or for that matter, of its militant opposition to all democratic people.” She also reported that the organization now had a membership in excess of 100,000, the largest in its 60-year history.
During the flveeday session, the delegates will initiate an examination of a set of recommendations from a self-evaluation of the organization, and will study and act upon the status of civil liberties in the U.S., education and social action, health and welfare programs, and a “little Point Four” program of assistance and service to Jewish communities overseas.
