Rabbi Theodore L. Adams, president of the Rabbinical Council of America, an Orthodox group, today denied that the Council favored the proposed law for national service of women in Israel. He further denied that there was any disagreement or difference of opinion between the Council and the Union of Orthodox Rabbis on this matter, as stated last week in Jerusalem by Rabbi Leon Katz, one of the leaders of the Council.
Referring to the statement attributed to Rabbi Katz, Rabbi Adams stated “categorically that Rabbi Katz bad no authority to speak in behalf of the Rabbinical Council of America or to pronounce its policy. ‘”The position of the Rabbinical Council of America has already been enunciated as supporting fully the position taken by the Chief Rabbinate of Israel on all religious matters pertaining to Israel and that we have Joined the Chief Rabbi in his opposition to the national service law, ” he said.
