Emphasizing that the internationalization of Jerusalem is possible, but only with the cooperation of Israel as well as Jordan, Bartley C. Crum, former U.S. member of the Anglo-American Committee of Inquiry on Palestine, today came out in the New York Times with the following suggestions:
1. “Make it a condition precedent for Jordan’s admission to the United Nations that it accept internationalization of Old Jerusalem and Bethlehem, Jordan to act as United Nations Trustee for that area.”
2. “Make it a condition precedent for any agreement by the United Nations that Israel may have its capital in Jerusalem, that the New City of Jerusalem be internationalized, with Israel as the United Nations Trustee in that area.”
3. “Extend the present truce terms between Israel and Jordan to open up the road to Mount Scopus, the campus of the Hebrew University and the Hadassah Hospital, and provide for free access of all pilgrims–Christians, Mohammedans and Jews–to all the Holy Places in all of the Palestine area.”
