Some 1,300 Jewish children of Casablanca’s mellah (ghetto) are now enjoying hot, nourishing meals regularly at the new Talmud Torah canteen opened here today by the Joint Distribution Committee.

The children are former street gamins rescued from filthy, disease-breeding surroundings by the JDC’s child care program. The youngsters now attend a modern Talmud Torah in a new building where they are given both an education and the best possible health care. The Talmud Torah was built and is maintained by the Jewish community of Casablanca under the supervision of the Alliance Israelite Universelle and the Ozar Hatorah, a local religious group, both of which receive JDC support.
