A former Nazi General who recently suggested that holders of German military decorations be permitted to wear them if the Nazi Swastikas are removed, told a lecture audience at nearby Alsfeld that he had received more than 1,000 “abusive letters.”

The General, Hasso von Manteuffel, said he favored removal of the swastikas because he believed that reintroduction of swastika decorations would give rise to “misunderstandings” abroad. A similar proposal for legalizing the wearing of World War II decorations “cleansed” of the Nazi symbol has been recommended by a Bonn Government advisory board.
