The Democratic State Committee was urged today by Jewish groups to include a plank in its platform calling for the amendment of New York’s archaic Sunday Blue Laws.
The Joint Committee for a Fair Sabbath Law, which submitted a statement to the Democratic group now in session, specifically asked that Orthodox Jews, Seventh Day Adventists and others who observe Saturday as their day of rest, be permitted to keep open their places of business on Sunday, provided they did not disturb those persons who observe Sunday as a day of rest.
The Joint Committee is made up of representatives of nearly every local and national Jewish organization with headquarters in New York State, including the American Jewish Congress, the American Jewish Committee, B’nai B’rith, Synagogue Council of America, the New York Board of Rabbis and the various Zionist organizations. The Protestant Council of New York and the New York Federation of Churches have endorsed the proposals advanced by the Joint Committee.
