Dr. Harris J. Levine was re-elected today president of the Jewish National Fund of America by the board of directors, representing all groups in the Zionist movement in this country, at its annual meeting here.
Dr. Levine announced at the meeting that a JNF forest will be established in Israel to bear the name of Ambassador Warren R. Austin, former United States representative to the United Nations, in recognition of the historic part he played in the founding of the State of Israel. The inauguration of the “Warren R. Austin Forest,” which will be planted by the Jewish communities of Mr. Austin’s native State of Vermont, was hailed by President Eisenhower in a letter to the Jewish National Fund.
He outlined a new plan for the future of the Jewish National Fund, now under consideration in Jerusalem, designed to establish the closest possible cooperation and coordination with the Government of Israel for the implementation of a large-scale policy of reclamation and development of Israel’s wastelands and Arab-abandoned field-areas.
Also elected at today’s board meeting were: Dr. Israel Goldstein, honorary president; Louis Segal, honorary secretary; Albert Schiff, treasurer, and Miss. Juliet N. Benjamin and Nat Levine, associate treasurers. Mendel N. Fisher, rounding out 20 years of service, was named executive director and secretary, and Isidore Epstein was named assistant secretary.
