The British Government was urged today to “show greater initiative” in solving the manifold problems in the Middle East, in a resolution adopted at the annual convention of the Zionist Federation of Britain and Ireland.
The convention also voiced its concern over the recently concluded Turco-Iraqi pact and the increasing flow of arms from the Western Powers to the Arab states. Other resolutions expressed opposition to the rearming of East and West Germany and appealed to the great powers to prevent the creation of a new German military machine, and expressed solidarity with the Jews in the Communist countries.
The delegates expressed regret that the restrictions on the transfer of capital from Britain have prevented the British Jewish community from participating more fully in the economic up building of Israel and has also prevented Israel from purchasing more from British concerns. Barnett Janner was re-elected president and Dr. I.S. Fox was named chairman of the Federation, without opposition in either case. Israel Sieff was named honorary president.
