Intermarriage, divorce, indifference and ignorance today threaten the foundations of Jewish life in this country as never before, it was reported here today at the 55th annual convention of the Rabbinical Assembly of America, the national association of Conservative rabbis. The report was presented by Rabbi Reuben M. Katz of Freeport, Long Island.
Rabbi Katz expressed the continuing concern of the rabbis who deal with daily problems of congregants. “Our family service agencies, like those serving other religious groups, are overburdened with tremendous case loads and never-ending waiting lists. To counteract these disturbing trends, we need positive action to keep the ideals of Jewish family life alive and apparent to our people.”
To cope with the problems of our age, the synagogue “must once again proclaim in unmistakable terms its passionate concern for the enduring principles of ethical religion, ” Rabbi Louis Katzoff of Chicago told a workshop session today. He noted that an increasing number of congregations are forming social actions committees and initiating programs to work for a better world.
