Dr. Jonas E. Salk, discoverer of the anti-polio vaccine, was awarded an honorary degree of Doctor of Laws by the City College of New York tonight at its 109th commencement exercises.
In addition to the honorary degree, the ninth such award made by the college in this century, CCNY also presented Dr. Salk with a medal struck especially for him. The medal was presented by New York’s Deputy Mayor, Henry Epstein, and the degree was conferred by Dr. Buell G. Gallagher, president of CCNY, of which Dr. Salk is an alumnus. New York Governor Averell Harriman was the main speaker at the commencement exercises.
