Canada has been asked to supply arms to Israel, it was learned here yesterday. Speaking at a news conference here, Michael S. Comay, Israel’s envoy to Canada, declared that Israel had “made approaches” to buy weapons from all Western countries including, by implication, Canada.
Mr. Comay revealed that Canada had supplied Israel with some small surplus arms in the past. He declined, however, to say whether Israel had made any specific requests for further weapons purchases at this time.
The United Zionist Council of Canada met in Montreal to consider measures for alerting the Jewish communities in the present emergency situation facing Israel. It was decided to send telegrams to the leaders in the communities across the country and call upon them to arrange mass meetings at which the Canadian Government will be urged to assist Israel in this emergency.
