Freedom of conscience and freedom of worship are among the basic principles of the South African Nationalist Party, Interior Minister T.E. Donges told a large gathering today at the consecration of the new Sydenham-Highlands North Synagogue here, the largest in the Union. Chief Rabbi Louis I. Rabinowitz consecrated the synagogue.

Dr. Donges, one of the most important Nationalist leaders, who spoke as an official representative of the government, pointed out that “our forefathers came to this country to obtain that freedom of religion which they were denied in their own countries.” He called freedom of religion a priceless heritage of the South African people, and expressed the hope that the new synagogue would be a bastion of that freedom and a “beacon of faith.”
